The following was taken from correspondence with Inge Kukk, Director of Tartu Art Museum, Estonia:

Probably it has been purchased by the son of Baron Karl Eduard von Liphart - Ernst von Liphart in 1870s from André Giroux & CO.

Ernst von Liphart was living in Paris from 1875 to 1886 and being himself an artist he acquired the J. Dupré's painting for his father's art collection.

Baron Karl Eduard von Liphart (Tartu 1808-1891 Florence) was the most outstanding art collector and connoisseur of art in Baltic Provinces of Russia in 19th century. The art collection of Raadi Manor was founded already in 18th century by the grandfather of Karl Eduard v. Liphart. In 1862 Karl Eduard von Liphart moved to Florence because of the weak health of his son Ernst. Up to the Florence period Karl Eduard collected mainly old prints and drawings (sold at auction: Boerner & CO).

He started to collect paintings in Florence thanks to the financial support of Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna(daughter of Russian Tsar Nikolai the First). That time he became a highly respected connoisseur of art in Europe, specializing on Italian, Dutch and Flemish art. After K.E. v. Liphart's death his collection of paintings was moved to Estonia to the Raadi Manor and it was merged with the art collection of other Liphart's family members.

After the Russian Revolution the Independent Estonian Republik was announced and Liphart's descendants moved abroad. The first auction of Liphart's collection of paintings took place in Denmark; in an auction at C.B. Ingwersen, 1920, Copenhagen. Jules Dupré’s Environs de Plymouth was listed as lot 25. It appears that the painting was not sold and reappeared in an auction at A. Mak, Amsterdam 1921, lot 12; annotated selling price was ƒ2050.

Jules Dupré's Environs de Plymouth reappeared at an auction in Germany in 1931 (H. Helbing, Munich, lot 179, RM1400, illustrated). What happened next I don't know.
